Laureen Jandroep asked:

If a patient has a chest x-ray for chest pain and shortness of breath and the conclusion is acute respiratory distress can you code for the chest pain? SOB is a symptom of acute respiratory distress but not CP.

Answer:

According to Mayo Clinic chest pain is not a sign or symptom so I would code the ARDS first then the chest pain. The SOB is part of ARDS so you would not code that separately. <http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ards/basics/symptoms/con-20030070>
