Resolved History of Seizure

Thanks for posting in the Free Forum. Per the FAQ, we have a "Show the Work" (AKA Provide Your Research) policy on "How Do I Code This?" Style Questions

Please include your proposed answer, guess, theory, or research to the coding question. "Showing the work" helps us understand your thought process better and also helps us respond accordingly with the correct information or guidance. Naturally, do not post private patient or company information that can violate HIPAA or company policies.

Here is a past video on seizures as it might be able to help.

For a quick overview, there are a few main ways to medically code a history of seizures:
  • If the patient has a current diagnosis of epilepsy, this would typically be coded with ICD-10 code G40.- (Epilepsy). The specific G40 code depends on the type of epilepsy.
  • For a personal history of epilepsy or seizures, but the condition is not considered active, you could use code Z86.73 (Personal history of epilepsy and other diseases of the nervous system).
  • If documenting a past seizure event that has resolved and is no longer being treated, you may use a code from category R56 (Convulsions) along with a personal history code like Z86.73.
  • If the seizure history is being documented as a manifestation of an underlying condition, like a brain injury, stroke, or brain tumor, you would code the underlying condition as the primary diagnosis and cite the appropriate sequela code to show seizures are associated with that condition.
So in summary, it depends if this is an active diagnosis of epilepsy, a personal history, or seizures due to another medical issue. Be sure to link the appropriate ICD-10 code showing the type of seizure disorder, personal history code, or underlying condition leading to the seizures. Let me know if you have any other coding questions!
