CCO Admin asked:

We have a sx that can only be done in an inpatient setting. However; the physician performed the surgery then the patient was admitted the following day. The operative note states inpatient with the admit date of the day after sx. I have coded and entered the SX as outpatient since the procedure was done prior to admit date. Would you agree with this or should it be posted as inpatient since that is what it states on the operative note?

Answer:

The setting is a hospital. The patient was admitted after the surgery which is often the case. The surgery should be considered part of the admission. Have you confirmed with management around the admission date?
