Most of the time the providers do not tell us why a person has hyptertension HTN and it is coded I10. If we are told the source vs the type you use I15 codes.
If the HTN is d/t being overweight or smoking- I15.8

High blood pressure (hypertension) may be due to an underlying medical condition. Specify the condition leading to hypertension as:

  • renovascular: renal artery obstruction or compression
  • other renal disorders: non-renalvascular
  • endocrine disorders: related to endocrine system
  • other: the documentation describes a condition which is not explained by other codes in this category
  • unspecified: when the documentation does not contain enough information to indicate the causal condition
