Lisa Short asked:
I need clarification on a UA drug screen G0480 and urinalysis 81001. We are getting edits that the 81001 needs a modifier if documentation supports medical necessity. We have many patients in our ER that have G0480 and 81001 ordered; It is typically the same specimen being used to run both tests; is it appropriate to use modifier 59 since they used the same urine specimen to run the drug screen and the urinalysis? They are not just doing ph; creatinine; nitrates that would be part of a validity test.
