The ethmoid sinus is approached by lateral rhinotomy which involves making an incision along the side of the nose and then drilling through the bone to access the anterior and posterior ethmoid cells. The ethmoid cells are inspected and purulent material and mucoceles evacuated. The mucosa is then removed (ablated) down to the bone. If the ethmoid ostiu is obstructed; an opening is created into the nasal cavity to allow drainage of fluid from the ethmoid cells.
