When using 99214 for established patient and having at least 2 components doesn't the time spent with the patient need need to be 30 mins or more when you are doing telepsych. medication med checks and does the patient need medication change to use this code versus using 99213.

You need to choose either coding by time (required documentation) or MDM, not both

If the doctor documents the total time spent, you can code by time. If not, code by MDM

Not that billing by time will often mean less reimbursement but not always. I would encourage your providers to use MDM as much as possible. However with specialty providers time is easy to do.

Hi Darcy,
Thank you clarifying this Just had a physician ask me this today. They wanted to bill by time not MDM so this is great i can tell them they are allow to do this for outpatient.
