Floor/unit time occurs when the physician is physically present on the patient's hospital floor or unit delivering bedside services to the patient. It includes both time spent with the patient and time spent working on the patient's chart or discussing his or her care with nurses and others. It applies to hospital observation services, inpatient hospital care, initial and follow-up hospital consultations, and nursing facility services.
